Aetna's Leadership in Healthcare Reform

Aetna has been working with state and federal leaders to help develop a collaborative approach to achieving comprehensive health care reform. In recent months, Aetna Chairman and CEO Ron Williams was called on to offer U.S. Senators his recommendations on the critical components of health care reform and specifically to suggest priorities for reforming the health care delivery system.

Williams emphasized in his testimony that the scope of reform needs to address more than access to help ensure that the system delivers high-quality health care and identified the key components to achieving meaningful systemic change as:

  • Provide coverage for all Americans regardless of their health conditions through an enforceable individual coverage requirement with subsidies for some and insurance market reforms for all;
  • Use health information technology as an important tool to address cost and quality issues;
  • Achieve payment reform that rewards physicians and hospitals for value or quality of care rather than just quantity;
  • Engage consumers in their own health care by focusing on prevention and wellness; and
  • Encourage small businesses to offer employee coverage through tax credits.

Williams testified before the U.S. Senate Finance Committee on health care reform and has met with President Barack Obama several times to discuss the economy and health care reform. He also pledged Aetna’s readiness to help make reform a reality. To learn more visit www.healthreformplan.com.
